Exploring the Eifel by motorhome: don't miss this!

Tessa Spek

Traveling to the Eifel by motorhome means entering a region full of contrasts: rugged nature, charming towns, silent memories, and fiery stories from the past. You can drive from a centuries-old castle to a racing circuit, or from a wine village to the rim of a volcanic crater. In this blog, we will take you to six spots you simply can't miss. Of course, there is a great motorhome location nearby, and you can find them all on Campercontact.

Volcano Park: lava flows and fiery tales

The Vulkanpark is a unique open-air area where you can see with your own eyes how volcanoes shaped the landscape of the Eifel. You will come across craters, ancient lava flows, and basalt formations spread across several locations. The visitor center explainshow the earth was in motion here thousands of years ago. It is an inspiring stop for motorhomers: compact, educational, and different from the usual nature parks. Great for those who want to do something special along the way, without having to walk for hours.

Overnight stay: Wohnmobilstellplatz Brauerstraße

Right next to the visitor center you will find a motorhome stopover that offers everything you need for a comfortable stay. The site is spacious and fairly flat, making parking easy. The location is peaceful yet central: the town center of Mendig is within walking distance and the Vulkanbrauerei is located right next door. Highly recommended for a bite to eat and a locally brewed beer; it is wise to book in advance, as the restaurant is popular. From the motorhome stopover, there are also various cycling and walking routes to explore in the area.

Vogelsang IP: history in green

Vogelsang IP is one of those places in the Eifel where history and nature meet. Once built with a dark past as a training complex, it has now been rediscovered as a significent site: a museum, memorial, and panoramic view of the landscape. The buildings, viewpoints, and art projects invite you to pause, walk, and look. The trails around Vogelsang IP are varied: elevation changes, quiet forest paths, and views of the reservoirs.

Overnight stay: Eifel-Wohnmobilpark-Vogelsang

In the heart of Eifel National Park lies a motorhome stopover with a fascinating historical background and stunning views. The site is still under construction, but already has water, disposal facilities and good Wi-Fi; electricity and additional facilities will follow shortly. Check-in is easy via a terminal and the access card for the Vogelsang barrier is included in the price. From the motorhome stopover, you can walk or cycle straight into the national park, and Vogelsang IP is also within walking distance. A hospitable manager and the the site's unique location make this a motorhome stopover many motorhomers like to return to.

Monschau: half-timbered houses and atmosphere on the Rur

Monschau is one of those places where you immediately want to grab your camera. The town is tucked away in a green valley and bursting with charm: half-timbered houses, narrow alleys and photogenic bridges over the River Rur. You can stroll past traditional shops, taste local mustard and discover small galleries hidden behind historic facades. If you walk to the castle above the town, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view over the rooftops and the surrounding hills.

Overnight stay: Bei Gerrit

Between the fish ponds, just 2 km from the centre of Monschau, there is a small-scale motorhome stopover, suitable for three motorhomes. You are surrounded by nature, right by the water, with regular chances of spotting wildlife. Facilities such as electricity and a clean toilet are available, although the site can be a bit muddy when it rains. The centre of Monschau is easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. The friendly owner contributes to the pleasant atmosphere, making this a spot many motorhomers love to return to.

Ahrtal: wine, hiking trails and warm hospitality

The Ahrtal is perhaps the most charming place on this list. The steep vineyards along the Ahr River provide a beautiful backdrop, and the small wine villages invite you to pause and taste local wines. You can hike, cycle or simply settle down on a terrace overlooking the grapevines. After the severe floods in 2021, the area is still recovering, but its warm hospitality remains unchanged.

Overnight stay: Campingplatz Am Ahrtor

Along the Ahr, near the walled old town, there are motorhome stopovers available on a small-scale campsite that reopened after the floods. The site offers beautiful views and a lush setting, and the centre, including a supermarket is only 100 metres away. Facilities are currently limited, but the friendly operator ensures that everything runs smoothly. Reservations are recommended, especially in high season. Despite past damage, motorhomers appreciate the location and are happy to return for the unique setting and the warm welcome.

Burg Eltz: a fairytale castle

Burg Eltz is exactly the kind of castle you dream about if you love history and charm. Nestled in a forested valley and surrounded by the castle-like landscape of the Eifel, with turrets, stone walls and interiors that feel centuries old. A scenic woodland path leads you there—you hear the birds, see the foliage, and suddenly the castle appears: enchanting. Inside, guided tours take you through gilded rooms, armories, and medieval living quarters. Don’t forget your camera for this magical visit.

Overnight stay: Wohnmobilstellplatz Lamarama

Near a small farm, 3 km from the centre, there is a peaceful and welcoming motorhome stopover surrounded by horses, llamas and chickens. You can choose your own pitch on the lawn, enjoy the views and let the kids play freely. The sanitary facilities are clean, electricity is available via a QR code and Wi-Fi is also available. In the self-service shop, you can order local products and fresh bread, and in the evening there is sometimes a cozy campfire.
